Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  -Philippians 4:6-7

People often travelled to his church to learn the secret of his success. When visitors would come to Spurgeon’s church he would take them to the basement prayer-room where people were always on their knees interceding. He called this prayer-room the powerhouse of the church. “If the engine room is out of action,” Spurgeon explains, “then the whole mill will grind to a halt. We cannot expect blessing if we do not ask.” -Charles Spurgeon, 19th Century London pastor

In everything? How can I pray for everything when I don’t know how to pray for anything? This is where many of us struggle. Just when we feel like we are in communion with God, something happens. Or when we think we hear the Holy Spirit, we are distracted by something else. On top of all that, our schedule seems to allow only for prayers of desperation (Help!) or asking to get out of a jam. We know, though, that that isn’t what God wants, and we definitely know that it is what we want!

We see people pray throughout the bible but think that we can’t pray like that. We see how Jesus interacted with the Father and just say that, well, “He is Jesus.” Or we read in the book of Acts about this power–the Holy Spirit–doing amazing things and Paul and other apostles praying and seeing the foundation of the church get built because of it. That kind of prayer, that kind of communion with God, is for what we long.

Jesus prayed for us, that we’d be able to live as light in this world, that we’d be protected from the enemy of darkness. But we need tools. We need to learn to pray, just as we do anything else in life. If you’re interested in learning more about prayer, what it is, and how it works, come join us from 9-11 AM on Saturday, July 11, at the Life office. We have free coffee and donuts, see what the bible says about prayer, and learn some ways people pray to help get us started. Sign up here.
